Grade 2s are visiting the Yukon River every few weeks and are using their observational skills to notice what is changing through the seasons. So fun to explore and learn outside!
We are on a pilgrimage of hope this year, and each month classes will be doing a special act, celebration or prayer to celebrate! We are currently working on a special activity to share hope with each other, keep an eye out around Easter to see what we are working on!
Happy Pink Shirt Day! Today students and teachers at CKES stood up against bullying by wearing pink!
The grade 2’s and 3’s have learned a song named “Snowman, Snowman” and are building their musical literacy by matching notes with names during Snowman Solfege music centres!
Congratulations to the grade 7 boys and girls basketball teams for winning the basketball tournament! To celebrate the grade 7 basketball teams played a game at lunch today against the teachers! Great game everybody!
This week students will have the opportunity to try out sports wheelchairs in physical education classes!
We are borrowing a set of sport wheelchairs from the Sports and Recreation branch this week. They will be available for teachers to use as part of their physical education programming. By using sports wheelchairs we can help students develop empathy, inclusion, and physical literacy. They can also help students learn about disability and how to participate in physical activity in a variety of ways. All students start at a similar skill level for the activities and they are learning a new way of moving, being active, and physically literate Ted Harrison is one of our favourite artists that has been inspired by the beautiful land here in Yukon. Check out this wonderful art made by 2B inspired by Ted Harrison! CKES has a print signed by Ted Harrison hanging up by our lost mittens!
Later this week is the grade 7 basketball tournament, and as part of the tournament the 2 CKES boys teams need to play each other. Thank you to Mr. B and Mr. Peterson for having the game today at lunch so we could watch too! Grade 4-7 students were invited to the gym to watch the game, and we started with some fun audience relay races. What team can get their mat to the other side of the gym first and then dribble the ball back?
What fun! The grade 2 and 3 classes are practicing having a calm, green zone lunch, and what better way to do that than having a picnic and listening to a story! Thanks Mrs. Sias for such a fun lunch time! Do you know what the green zone is?
CKES uses the Zones of Regulation. This is a social-emotional learning program that helps teach kids to name emotions, self-regulate and gain control over their emotions. Lunch time can be a time a common time where students can become dysregulated, and we want to make sure everyone is in the green zone, both at lunch time and after. When you are in the green zone you are focused, calm, happy, content and ready to learn. Thank you for the On The Road Team from Science World for amazing science presentations and demonstrations! Today students got to experience a Science World show that has travelled to us all the way from Vancouver. The presentations were fun, interactive and full of science learning! From Kindergarten to Grade 3 we learned about the states of matter, Bernoulliʼs principle, and the 3 most important steps to science: Observe, Predict, and Test it Out! Some of our favourite parts were the air pressure rocket and the wind bag races! In Grade 4-7 we learned about electricity, Bernoulliʼs principle, and weather!
Some of our favourite moments were making clouds and the Van de Graaff generator! Kindergarten students are helping our school community by collecting, matching, and hanging up lost mittens to dry! Next time you are at the school, stop by our lost mittens to see if any belong to your children!
Something special about Christ the King is that every class does a service learning project each school year. Classes find ways help our school, Riverdale, and Whitehorse communities through these projects. St. Valentine is the patron saint of love, beekeepers and people with epilepsy. We celebrate by focusing on how we can be kind to others. We take time today share cards and notes with each other to show kindness and appreciation for our friends and teachers! Kindergarten and grade one have been filling our hearts with kindness by writing or drawing ways to be kind! Thank you to the grade 7ʼs for organizing Candygrams! For two weeks students have been writing notes to send to others with a special treat. Money raised will be used towards a grade 7 trip to Mount Sima. Grade 1B has been writing cupid stories! Grade 4B has been making crafts and decorations! 6A has made some beautiful hearts! Grade 2s visited Copper Ridge Place and the Thompson centre to spread some St. Valentineʼs day cheer! How does your family celebrate St. Valentineʼs Day?
